Why is Measuring Your Biological Age Useful?

Your TruAge

Aging is an inevitable part of life, but how we age, and at what pace, is far more variable than many realise. While we often measure age in years, this number tells us little about the state of our health, our longevity, or our risk for disease.

Biological age provides a clearer picture of how well (or poorly) our body is aging on a cellular level.

In today’s blog, we’ll explore the benefits of measuring your biological age and how it can help you on the path to optimal health.

Chronological and biological age

Your chronological age is straightforward, essentially telling you the number of years you’ve been alive. Biological age, however, is a reflection of how old your body truly is based on various biomarkers, including DNA methylation, inflammation, and cellular function.

Two people may both be 50 years old chronologically, but one could have a biological age of 40, while the other may be biologically 60 – meaning their body is aging at a much faster rate.

Why does this matter?

Because biological age is one of the strongest predictors of overall health and longevity. It has a magnitude more significant than any individual risk factor, including smoking, obesity, or hypertension. Age is the single greatest risk factor for nearly every chronic disease, from cardiovascular conditions to neurodegenerative disorders.

To show how we age differently, researchers from Duke recently carried out an analysis of the DunedInPACE cohort at the age of 45. Here’s what the results showed:

The impact of aging at different speeds

If you maintain a healthy biological age and age at a rate of 0.7 years per chronological year, by the time you reach retirement age at 67, your body may only be biologically 55. Contrast that with someone aging at 1.5 years per chronological year – by the time they reach 67, their biological age would be closer to 80, a whopping 25 year difference.

Now, look at this in the context of life expectancy. The average lifespan might be around 80 years, but that’s just an average number. Many people never reach 80, particularly those aging at an accelerated pace.

Simply put, those aging faster don’t make it to the average. This is why understanding and measuring your biological age is so important. It allows for proactive interventions that can slow aging, improve your lifespan, and increase the likelihood of not just living longer, but living better.

How TruAge can help

Biological age testing is not just a theoretical concept, it is available at Kent Cardio in the form of a TruAge test. This precise, measurable tool can provide invaluable insight into your current state of health and the rate at which you’re aging.

Unlike standard health check-ups that focus on individual risk factors in isolation, TruAge provides a more holistic view of longevity and risk of disease. With TruAge testing, Dr Grosser can provide a precise and tailored treatment plan, which may include lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes, or medical therapies, to slow aging and optimise long-term health.

The real value of these tests comes from re-measuring over time to see how your aging rate changes. If your biological age continues to climb faster than your chronological age, adjustments can be made. If it slows down, it confirms that your interventions are working.

We routinely track other health markers including cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose levels – biological age testing should be no different. Given that aging itself is the biggest risk factor for nearly every major cause of death, monitoring its pace is one of the most important things we can do for long-term health.

Taking control of your future

The science of aging is rapidly evolving, and the ability to measure biological age represents a significant breakthrough in personalised healthcare. By understanding how fast (or slow) we’re aging, we can take meaningful steps to extend both lifespan and overall health.

Aging may be inevitable, but how you age is something you have the power to influence. The first step is knowing where you stand, and that’s exactly what biological age testing provides.
